This is from James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits. Love it ![]()
He talks about not having to rely on feelings to get things done, including exercise .
It’s impossible to always feel motivated.
And if we relied on whether we felt like it to do things, I’m sure a lot of things would not get done!
Things that can help us get out the door
(which is often the hardest part!)
Having a plan – if it’s in the diary, there’s no need to think when am I going to do it
What’s the alternative – when I’m not feeling it, I have a little conversation with myself; Yes I could lie in bed a bit longer or stay on the sofa but then how would I feel? And wouldn’t I just not get bored in 15 mins anyway and wish I’d gone?!
Remove the barriers – this may mean having your kit ready to put on the next morning or not returning home after school run/work – just go straight out before you get distracted or decide you’re too tired!
Think bigger picture – remind yourself why you’re doing it
Arrange to go with a friend or have a coach – preferably both! It really helps when you have that sense of commitment
You never regret exercising, only regret not doing it! ![]()
If we’re relying on always feeling motivated or in the mood in order to take action to change things, things may or may not happen ![]()
