New Year Resolutions

‘A New Year, a New You’

‘My goals this year are…’

Anyone getting a bit sick of reading/listening to these statements and such like?

I guess as someone in the fitness industry, I should be taking advantage!

I get what’s behind it; everyone wants to improve their health and well being, absolutely 100%, go for it.

I’m all for that. And the start of a new year is a good opportunity to start fresh, why not?

However, It might be more helpful to think about the language around making a new start and setting goals.

The moment we say, ‘this year I HAVE TO do this….’ or ‘my goal is….’ then automatically we’ve set ourselves up for failure. If your goal is not met, what does that mean? We start beating ourselves up.

Setting standards or commitments I think are better words than goals.

The moment we start saying I HAVE to do something, I HAVE to get my 10,000 steps today, not only does it sound like someone or something else is MAKING you do it therefore not taking responsibility yourself, it also becomes very off putting.

Instead think, this year ‘I would like to’ or ‘I want to’ walk 10,000 steps / cut down on sugar / read a book every month.

This means that you have chosen to do this, no one or nothing else is making you.

You choose to walk because you want to improve your health. This will give you a better quality of life etc.

I’m still thinking about mine..!

So, what have YOU chosen to do this year @everyone?!
