Have you made any new years resolutions?
Or ‘goals’ for this year?
Things you keep meaning to do or get on top of but just have not managed it yet?!
I encourage people I work with, when thinking about what they’d like to achieve, to break it down.
Ask WHY at least 3 times.
WHY do you want to lose weight?
‘To fit into my clothes again’ or ‘to feel better’ or ‘my GP told me I should’
WHY?
‘I don’t want to buy new clothes!’ ‘If I feel better about myself, this will lead to better choices around food and movement ’
WHY?
‘If I have to buy new clothes I know that will make me feel depressed’ etc etc
Really break it down.
This helps to:
1. Really get to the bottom of why you want to make that change and whether it’s actually just superficial
2. Take ownership of what you want to achieve
3. Understand yourself and what you want
4. Fall back onto when you’re really struggling. And you will have times when it’s really hard!
Another thing to do which can be really helpful to think about when you’re struggling is visualise the future when you’re in that place that you want to be ![]()
Imagine what it will be like when you get there.
When you’re in that pair of jeans.
When doing press ups is easy (!)
When you’re walking up that hill and you’re not breathless at the top
When you’re keeping up with the kids/grandkids and not being left behind
Remembering why you set that goal or ‘want’ when it’s hard, can really help you get through a tough patch and stay the course.
