I was not long into my marathon training and I really hurt my back.
It was just niggly at first so I ignored it and kept running.
But it got worse.
When it was bad, I couldn’t even get up from the sofa without help.
I had to crawl up the stairs.
I couldn’t possibly see how I was going to run ever again never mind a marathon in 4 months time!
I did have to stop running and lots of other exercise too.
Each day that went by when I didn’t run, it was becoming even less possible in my mind and more frustrating.
But I found something I could do. Even if was just going up onto my toes and back down again.
I had to do *something*.
Just so I knew I wasn’t doing nothing.
It’s so hard to see the other side when you’re in pain.
I know not many of you are running a marathon anytime soon (well, some people are Heather Griffin and Roxy Lock
) but the point I’m making is
– It’s difficult sometimes to look past the pain in the moment
– There’s always *something* that can be done
– Something is better than nothing – even if it’s just for your mental health if nothing else.
– There’s usually an end to the pain.
And there was for me (I’m so grateful
) and amazingly, I did run the marathon!!!
My back is still something I have to be careful with, and if I’m having a bad week, I may have to stop training but I do try and find something I can do..!
